May 17 Update

Great to see some positive news come out of the RMWB updates today. Growth of the wildfire has slowed thanks to rain and cooler temperatures - the size of the fire did not increase today.

On behalf of the leadership team, we hope you all have a chance to rest and relax with loved ones this weekend.

Take care of yourselves and each other.

May 17 – 6:30 p.m. RMWB update:

Fire growth:

  • Minimal fire activity was observed today and there was no growth in the fire.

  • Weather kept helicopters grounded, but heavy equipment operators were able to work and almost completed the fire guard that stretches from Athabasca River to Highway 63.

 Information for Evacuees:

  • Two Alberta Health Services multidisciplinary teams are on site at the Edmonton reception centre (Clareview Arena) from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide mental health and first aid supports.

  • On-site support is available at the reception centres in Cold Lake and Lac La Biche.

  • 24-hour support is also available via the Mental Health Helpline at 1-877-303-2642

  • Curbside collection has now resumed in areas of town not under the evacuation order. Please put your bins out on the curb before 7:30 a.m. on your regular collection day. If you live in Fort McMurray and missed your normal collection day on Wednesday or Tuesday, please put your bins out for pickup tomorrow, May 18.
